The focus of all my work is "Form". The objective paintings are primarily concerned with natural forms and the way they merge and emerge in space. The more abstract mixed media work done thus far deals with the way forms interact and appear to dissolve into and replace one another. The tapestry like effect that results from disintegrating layers,laid side by side, has consistently drawn my attention. All of the work is inspired by nature. This site is in progress; earlier examples of objective and abstract paintings are being added.

oil on canvas. This painting is of a tiny perfect foreign melon that I discovered in the local market. It was painted during a period of imposed stillness. Of trying to discern who I now am.

papaya! is an oil painting on prepared board. Large papayas like this one remind me of the years I spent in Mexico. They are usually bruised and beat-up looking on the outside. Their skins are thin and delicate- providing little protection for the massive ripe fruit within.

Oil on prepared board. I visited the pottery studio of my friend Carol Clamer during a sale of her work. The work was strong and beautiful- but out of my price range. I left with this flawless white pattypan squash- a gift from Carol. It had been a gift to her from a local Dixon farmer. I worked on this piece at dusk- placing the white squash on a white table cloth. Due to the quality of light in the studio, neither of course looked white. I am surprised at how this painting changes under bright lights. The colors are intense, almost garish- not pewterish, as the squash appeared to me, barely visible in the wanning light. Oddly, that is what happens to the painting as well, when seen in natural light, or with some distance. I must have seen those colors- squinting in the dimly lit room. They must have been there, but were not easily distinguished. This piece is dedicated to the memory of my dear friend Carol, who stayed on me about painting her squash. It was her last show. I sometimes wonder if she knew that.

"Precious"

Pastel on bark paper. I have been fascinated with bulbous ballet squashes for a number of years. This was such a beautiful one. This piece was created at dusk, as much of my recent work has been. The name came from popular warnings in academic art circles against being "precious". I feel that all art is an endeavor to capture what is precious, or valuable, to the artist, whether it is a fleeting view of nature, a clear idea, or an intuitive hunch.

Oil on canvas. Revolution is not meant to be seen from only one angle, but to be turned periodically. The "revolution" its name refers to, however, is that of radical change, or states of being.
